  • except that I have rarely seen a mastiff an old English mastiff repre- sented the Egyptians except for an elongated greyhound and his head high so the question is bizzard but between the mastiff who is a big dog and the German mastiff who is also a mastiff he would be logical so that is the Danish or then the levrier would have to be added to answer levrier or lever of egypt not?

  • I am enjoying this question as well as the responses.

It's nice to see a source even if it is not a scholarly source.

I don't know if anyone noticed it said legend says a mastiff was given.  A legend is not verifiable. The only descendents that can be traced to the mastiff is England.

In my opinion none of the drawing resemble a mastiff type or molosser breed. They resemble sight hounds.

    • Lol ...I agree the photos didn’t resemble what we consider in the present time to be a mastiff ...but that is why it said  the term “mastiff” ...described a giant dog and not a specific breed .....

I suppose back in ancient times a mastiff could’ve looked like any giant dog ...a giant wolf a giant lean dog any kinda dog :-/

Thats also probably why it states that anscestory is not reliable before the 19th century which would bring us to what was evolved into the English mastiff amongst other mastiff types we have today ....

    • It’s like referring to the Bible no one has verifiable sources lol

  • I was confused by the source of the answer and to my eye it didn’t necessarily give the answer or any direct answer to the question for that matter lol...To me it still simply just stated some of the breeds that they think were descended from Egyptian dogs....So I went and did some more research...

The catch is the term Mastiff!!!!  ...The term mastiff describes a group of giant dogs rather then a specific breed...The mastiff anscestory isn’t reliable beyond the 19th century although there have been Egyptian drawings of a “typical” mastiff dating back to 3000 B.C. I interpret this as typical mastiff as just being a giant dog during that time era....mastiffs have obviously adapted and changed over many years like most domestic animals have :-)

The article also states that mastiffs originated in ASIA not England
