Common Allergies That Make Dogs Sick

Just like humans, dogs too suffer from different kind of allergies. These allergies not only disturb the health of the dog but can also reduce their lifespan. Given below are some of the common symptoms which dogs show when they are suffering from an allergy.

Itchy ears and ear infections

Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin

Increased scratching

Sneezing

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Itchy, runny eyes

Itchy back or base of tail (most commonly flea allergy)

Snoring caused by an inflamed throat

Dogs even suffer from secondary bacterial or yeast skin infections, which may cause hair loss, scabs or crusts on the skin. For these common symptoms, there is allergy medication given to the dogs.

Different breeds which are at a risk of suffering from allergies

The allergy could be developed by any dog at any time during his life, but allergic effects are quite common mainly in Terriers, Setters, Retrievers, and flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs and Boston terriers.

 

Various products or substance to which dogs are allergic

There are a number of things from which dogs can be allergic. They are:-

Cigarette smoke

Dust and house dust mites

Dander

Feathers

Tree, grass and weed pollens

Mold Spores

Food ingredients (e.g. beef, chicken, pork, corn, wheat or soy)

Prescription drugs

Fleas and flea-control products (Only a few flea bites can trigger intense itchiness for two to three weeks!)

Perfumes

Cleaning products

Fabrics

Insecticidal shampoo

Rubber and plastic materials

Some dogs are allergic to food as well

Like humans suffer from food allergies, such as wheat allergy, milk allergy etc, even dogs go through such problems. Finding out which allergy is annoying your dog, it actually consumes a lot of time. The dogs who suffer from food allergy will commonly have itchy skin, chronic ear

 

infections or sometimes gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea and vomiting. Even there are different diets which dogs are given. This is elimination test which is conducted by giving a variety of diets. Once you are aware that your dog is particularly allergic to some food then avoid giving that item in his meal. For food allergy, there is no kind of allergy medication.

How to treat allergies suffered by Dog

If your dog is a victim of some particular allergy then the best way is to remove the offending allergens from the surroundings.

Prevention is better than cure so take care beforehand. If your dog is suffering from flea allergy than ask the doctor for the best flea control products for your dog and the environment.

If your dog is allergic to dust than clean his bed weekly and takes care of the rugs, carpets and curtains. These are the things which hold dust so take care in advance.

Get allergic medication from a doctor.

For the itching problem of the dog, make sure you bath him weekly and ask the doctor about the shampoo which you can use for him.
